The God I love, who created the universe, has shown his love for us through the death and resurrection of his son Jesus Christ on the cross. His grace means that he has called us to be his hands and feet, even when we turn our backs on him in sin. He has made us “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who has called you out of the darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). Jesus lived the perfect life that we couldn’t live, saving us from the sins we couldn’t save ourselves from, so that we could be called “God’s people” (verse 10), on mission for his glory.
Because of his undeserved favor, God has called us to be a “royal priesthood.” As people of God, he has called us to live our lives in such a way, that people who may not know us personally, will still know us by the way we boldly love others in the name of Jesus. God’s call for us to be holy is not that we would try to use our actions to get to heaven. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-10). Jesus has already paid the price on the cross; all we have to do is accept the free gift. As each of us grows in our faith, we will grow to want to please him through our actions. We do this because we long to be obedient to our God, the one who rescued us out of darkness and gave us a new identity. We hold ourselves to a higher standard, as Jesus did, and live to spread the good news of Jesus Christ.
Remind yourself today that God has given you the undeserved gift of eternal life. Live out the love God has shown you through the bold love you show others.
