Change

The change that comes with knowing Jesus is not like the change we see on TLC. After you become a follower of Jesus, the transformation is not like a weight loss program or an addiction clinic. When we want to change our earthly selves, we have to convict our own hearts to make the change. Instead, when we want to change our spiritual selves, God is the one who convicts and is the potter who shapes us like a lump of clay (Isaiah 64:8).

Pastor and Potter Pat Lazovich explains how, for a potter to mold the clay, he must use water. The Bible says we need “spiritual” water to change and grow in our faith. Jesus said, “Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14). Jesus is the living water that we are longing for in this life. When we receive this water (salvation that comes from Jesus) we enter into a relationship where we are forever changed. In this relationship, He brings us into His family, communicates to us by His Word and prayer and changes our hearts for the better.

“So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good” (1 Peter 2: 1-3). Earthly things cannot change our walk with Christ. Only Christ can do that. When we don’t have Christ at the center of our lives, we will become like the wealthy man who rejected Christ because he had money at the center of his life instead of God (Mark 10). Once we have tasted the love of God we will long for it, as Peter describes it, like an infant longs for his mother’s milk.

Why do you continue to live without Christ at the center of your life, when with him, you can be victorious over sin and even death? The struggles you face will never surpass the love God has for you, so reflect on Jesus’ water of eternal life, and allow God to convict and soften your heart and he will surely shape you into beautiful pottery.
